Population Over Time
Exponential Growth Model
Equation:
N(t) = N₀ × e^(rt)
where N(t) = population at time t, N₀ = initial population, r = growth rate, t = time
Key Characteristics:
- Unlimited resources: Assumes infinite resources and space
- Constant growth rate: Per capita growth rate (r) stays constant
- J-shaped curve: Population grows slowly at first, then rapidly accelerates
- No carrying capacity: Growth continues indefinitely
- Doubling time: Time to double = ln(2) / r ≈ 0.693 / r
Limitations:
Exponential growth cannot continue indefinitely in nature due to limited resources, space, predation, disease, and other environmental factors. It's most accurate for short-term predictions when resources are abundant.
